Supply Chain & Warehousing

Stock Is Held Somewhere, and Someone Pays for That Decision

Warehousing, distribution and stock holding decide whether products are available when needed. Mordor Intelligence estimates the UK contract logistics market at US$21.16bn in 2025 and US$21.83bn in 2026, growing 3.17% a year to 2031, according to Mordor Intelligence. That market includes transport as well as warehousing. The faster-growing part is specialist: Grand View Research forecasts annual growth of 8.7% for UK healthcare cold chain third-party logistics over 2025 to 2033, according to Grand View Research. Biologics, cell and gene therapies, automation and point-of-use technology on wards are likely to drive that growth.

What our briefings cover

Contract Logistics. Third-party (3PL) and fourth-party (4PL) logistics, cross-docking, and reverse logistics for returns and recalls.

Temperature-Controlled Storage. Good Distribution Practice (GDP) cold storage at 2-8°C, ultra-low temperature storage and cold chain validation.

Warehouse Infrastructure and Automation. Material handling equipment (MHE), racking, Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) and autonomous mobile robots (AMR).

Inventory and Point of Use. Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), smart cabinets, two-bin kanban replenishment, consignment stock and GS1 Scan4Safety barcode tracking.

The commercial reality: what open-book shows and what it leaves out

Open-book arrangements and gainshare mechanisms improve visibility of cost, and the question is how much they reveal. Equipment charges, overhead allocation and labour assumptions can sit outside what a buyer can test. Storage and handling charges accumulate through the year. At contract end, stock, systems and people all have to move, so data handover and the condition of premises shape the leverage of both sides.

Specialist logistics is attracting acquirers, and our briefings follow why. In April 2026 PHSE Group announced its acquisition of The Courier Company (UK), a radiopharmaceutical logistics operator, according to PHSE. We look at the regulatory weight of Good Distribution Practice and device rules, consolidation among contract logistics providers, the effect of tariffs and freight costs, national against local stock models, and where frameworks and competition leave the best value for money.
